Scout Troop 271

Gerald R. Ford Council - Grand Rapids, MI

What’s in it for the boys?

Adventure. Hiking, biking, canoeing, orienteering—we do all of this and more on our monthly campouts.

Fun. From duct tape stretchers to popsicle stick catapults, our weekly patrol challenges teach leadership and teamwork. They are a blast for the kids participate in.

Skills. In addition to the wide variety of interesting merit badges you can earn, we are a troop that takes outdoor cooking seriously. Nothing tastes better than a warm dutch-oven dinner that you helped prepare.

What’s in it for my family?

Family time. Parents are welcome on all of our outings, so come and spend some time with your son on the trail or in the boat. We keep most of our campouts within 1-3 hours of Grand Rapids, so you can fit them into your busy schedule.

Fun. We are a boy-led troop, which means that the boys do most of the work! And learn leadership skills. At meetings and outings, adults give the boys some guidance, but there is plenty of play time for the grown-ups.

What’s in it for the community?

Service. We clear new trails, volunteer at races, and serve pancakes at neighborhood breakfasts. Most importantly, our monthly service projects teach us how important volunteer service is to our community, our nation, and our world.

Leadership. Through all of our fun and adventure, we are always mindful that we are training the leaders of tomorrow. We provide our boys with age-appropriate spaces to fail, learn, grow, and succeed as they mature into the young men of character that our community always needs.
